Steps to privatize the telecommunications sector in Lebanon are proceeding in the "right direction," said Telecom Minister Jean-Louis Qordahi on Wednesday.
The minister stated that the required procedure to privatize the sector took place during discussions with the premier and Higher Privatization Council Secretary General Ghazi Youssef, reported the Daily Star.
A draft law which calls for privatizing the sector will be presented during cabinet's weekly meeting on Thursday, he added.
In another development, the paper said that a ministerial committee in charge of regulating the country's communications and information technology pledged during a meeting on Wednesday to pool its resources to promote tourism.
Participants discussed improving the country's much-needed tourism by means of the internet.
Suggestions focused on the creation of a website called Tourisnet. However, the plan remains preliminary, said the paper.
Participants discussed the establishing of a governmental network called GOVNET, which would link public institutions via the internet, and also brainstormed a draft law which would stamp out cyber crime, according to the paper.
