The army killed nine al-Nusra Front militants in shelling on the Wadi al-Khail on the outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal, the National News Agency said on Wednesday.

The army shelled positions and vehicles of the Front in Wadi al-Khail inflicting direct damage among their ranks and killing one of its officials, Abou Firas al-Jebbeh, together with his three companions, NNA added.

At least five other militants were also killed while they were attempting to drag away the bodies of their associates.

Arsal lies along Lebanon's border with Syria. It hosts many Syrian refugees as well as rebel fighters in the surrounding countryside.

The town was the scene of fierce fighting in August 2014 between Lebanese security forces and members of al-Qaeda's Syria affiliate Nusra Front and Daesh.
