The death toll from the latest Cairo clashes increased to 7. Over 300 people were injured. Among the dead, Sheikd Emad Efat, a prominent Muslim cleric, activists said. Efat was known for his harsh criticism of the army. He also issued a religious edict forbidding voting for former members of the regime in elections.
A human rights activist confirmed gunshot wounds killed at least seven protesters in the clashes. Ramy Raouf of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights said bodies arrived overnight at a nearby hospital. There were reports of live gunfire from the rooftops.
The new violence exacerbates the political tensions. Members of a civilian advisory panel created by the military suspended their work, demanding an immediate end to violence against protesters and a formal apology from the ruling military council. Two of its members resigned in protest.
