Kuwait is expected to deport around 1,100 Lebanese and Syrians over their alleged ties to Hezbollah, days after Bahrain announced a similar move in an escalating conflict pitting Lebanon and the Gulf, a newspaper reported Friday.
Kuwaiti daily Al-Qabas cited a security source as saying most of the expected deportees had been given a one-month notice, while others were categorized as “dangerous”, and are to be expelled immediately.
The report comes a day after Kuwaiti authorities upped their security measures and prepared lists of businessmen and media figures suspected of links to Hezbollah.
Earlier this month, the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council, to which Kuwait belongs, blacklisted Hezbollah as a terrorist group.
The source cited in the report said that security services had received names of Lebanese and Syrians that have previously been asked to leave other Gulf countries.
On Monday, Bahrain's interior minister announced the deportation of a number of Lebanese it accused of belonging to, or supporting Hezbollah.
