Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Thursday repeated his pledge to make extra efforts to help maintain global economic stability in the wake of this month's terrorist attacks in the United States.

"With the terrorist attacks this time, there are concerns about their effects on the global economy," Koizumi said in his policy speech at the opening of the new Diet [parliament] session.

"The government will carefully monitor the situation and will take the appropriate actions to maintain a stable economy -- including financial systems and foreign exchange -- by working with other nations," he said.

Koizumi also reiterated his decision ahead of last week's trip to Washington that the Japanese government would provide logistical support for any US retaliation.

He has promised Japan would provide non-combat assistance such as medical treatment, transport and supplies, but would not contravene the constitution which bars the use of force to settle international disputes -- TOKYO (AFP)
