Jordan's police in the city of Salt apprehended a 32-year-old who allegedly shot and killed his divorced sister last week for "reasons of family honor," Jordan Times reported Sunday.
Fada Mohammad was murdered by her brother when she was divorced by her husband, the daily said, adding that the brother then went and turned himself in, claiming to have killed his sister for reasons of honor.
An unidentified source told the paper that the victim became pregnant out of wedlock almost two years before the incident and was later wed by the governor to the man who “had raped her.”
It’s customary in Jordan that an administrative governor forces couples accused of adultery to get legally married.
But the victim’s husband decided to divorce her last week and she returned to her family home, the source explained.
Thousands of Jordanian signed last year a petition for the authorities to abolish an article in the penal law that gives reduced prison sentences to those who commit “honor killings,” but the conservative parliament turned down the proposed amendment -- Albawaba.com
