A Jordanian officer killed in a helicopter crash near Sanaa was there on a training mission for Yemeni elite forces, a Jordanian military spokesman said Tuesday.

"Sergeant Ibrahim Ajarmeh was taking part in a Jordanian military mission in Yemen that was training our Yemeni brothers in special operations," said the spokesman, cited by Jordan's official news agency Petra.

He said Ajarmeh and four Yemeni servicemen were killed Monday when their helicopter crashed because of a technical malfunction.

A Yemeni military source also said technical problems were to blame for the crash of the Russian-built Mi-17 military transport helicopter in the Sabaha region, 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Sanaa -- AMMAN (AFP)
