A Jordanian man has been officially indicted for murdering his 35-year-old divorced sister and has been detained following an official complaint from a second brother, official sources said on Sunday.
Huda A. died one week after being admitted to a government hospital in Irbid, 90 kilometers to the north of the capital Amman, on July 31. She was admitted in a partial coma.
Doctors determined that the woman had received several blows to the head, sources told the Jordan Times.
The authorities arrested the victim's brother, who told interrogators that he killed his sister for reasons of family honor because he saw her talking with another man.
“The second brother tried to deter the suspect from killing his sibling but he refused and beat her up repeatedly with a wooden stick over her head because of her alleged misbehaviors,” the source said.
The two brothers then quarreled over the beating incident, bringing the case to the police who then opened an investigation into the woman's death, the source added.
The 38-year-old suspect, a father of six, is currently in Qafqafa Correctional and Rehabilitation Center awaiting trial, the sources told the paper.
Huda, who has been divorced for 10 years, is the 14th victim of an honor crime in the kingdom since the beginning of the year, according to the paper’s estimates - Albawaba.com
