A disgruntled former pilot for Royal Jordanian Airlines was the source of false bomb alerts that forced two of the airline's planes to make emergency landings, Jordan's interior ministry said Tuesday.

"Security services have identified the person who called the Queen Alia Airport to alert them of the presence of two bombs" late Monday, the ministry said in a statement.

It said the pilot had been fired from Royal Jordanian two years ago and wanted to "defame" the airline.

The former pilot, identified as Fakhri Ahmed al-Heneiti, was arrested and will face charges, the statement said.

One of the flights, traveling from Amman to Doha, made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The other turned back quickly to Queen Alia Airport -- AMMAN (AFP)
