Jordanian and Iraqi trade officials are expected to meet in Amman next month to discuss the trade protocol between the two countries, the Jordan Times reported Monday.

Jordan’s Trade and Industry Minister Wassef Azar was quoted by the daily as saying that “the talks will center on economic issues including Jordanian exports to Iraq.”

Azar stressed that the meeting would not involve any discussion of political issues, such as the UK-US supported “smart sanctions” which the two countries are trying to impose on Iraq, said the paper.

Last month, Iraq threatened to cut off oil supplies to Jordan and Turkey if they agreed to implement the proposed “smart sanctions.”

Jordan and its eastern neighbor are bound by an annual trade protocol, which jumped to $450 million this year from the previous $300 million – Albawaba.com
