Jordan will be helping to train Syrian rebels as part of a US program to fight Daesh (ISIS), AP reported Monday.
Jordan is only one of the Arab countries that is participating in the Western-led training, which plans to equip 5,000 moderate Syrian fighters for the battle against the growing extremist group. Congress has passed legislation that would provide $500 million to train the rebels over the next year, for which Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have agreed to provide training sites.
Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani told AP the country wants to help the training program to "defeat the terrorism that has been killing their sons and daughters."
Jordan has not confirmed whether it will be a site for the training.
The country is part of the US-led coalition against the militant group. Jordan stepped up its airstrikes after the extremists released a video showing the burning alive of pilot Muath al-Kasasbeh.
