Turkey and the United States signed an agreement to train and equip Syrian opposition fighters, a Turkish Foreign Ministry official told Reuters Thursday.
The US military told Reuters it planned to send more than 400 troops to train Syrian moderates in efforts against ISIS (Daesh) militants. The training will take place in sites outside of Syria.
The US will be training about 5,000 Syrian fighters a year for three years under the agreement. Saudi Arabia and Qatar, alongside Turkey, have also agreed to host training sites. Turkey said it hopes the training will help Syrian forces fight not only against Daesh but also the Syrian regime.
Reuters reported the agreement was signed between the foreign ministry undersecretary and the US ambassador.
