As the ban on the use of dried milk in food industries was lifted on Wednesday, the government said it was taking precautionary measures to ensure there would be no deceptive practices by dairy manufacturers who will use powder milk, Jordan Times reported Thursday.
When Jordan joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) last April, it agreed with the global body not to allow the use of dried milk in Jordanian food industries, the daily said, noting that the one-year deal, which ended on April 11th was taken to protect the national dairy industry.
A tripartite committee, grouping the ministries of trade and industry and agriculture and the Department of Metrology and Standardization was set up to organize the use of dehydrated milk in food items.
Samer Tawil, Trade and Industry Ministry secretary general told the paper that “we want to make sure that manufacturers will not mislabel dairy products where dried milk was used, thus cheating consumers by writing that these products were made of fresh milk without a mention of the dehydrated milk.”
He added that there was a space for cheating, as manufacturers could mix both types of milk without notifying the consumers – Albawaba.com
