The follow-up committee of the Jordanian National Gathering for Supporting the Intifada has drawn up a list of the American products Jordanians are urged to boycott, according to a statement faxed to Albawaba.com in Amman on Wednesday.

The Gathering is a coalition opposition parties and the Islamist-dominated professional unions. It has staged a number of rallies and other anti-Israeli and anti-US peaceful activities.

The statement stressed that boycotting US products has become “a popular Arab demand” and that similar campaigns in other Arab countries have achieved remarkable results.

There have been reports that buying US made goods in the UAE has dropped by 50 percent, and of a similar success in Qatar where Muslim clerics have issues fatwas prohibiting supporting US, and consequently its ally Israel, by purchasing its products.

The committee said that its campaign is two-fold. First, it will promote public awareness and fuel anti-US sentiments, and secondly, boycotting US products will become a real-life practice embodying the their stand against American policies.

The statement called on the people to stop buying clothes, shoes, electrical appliances, household items, soft drinks and canned food manufactured by American companies, in addition to fast foods served by American restaurants.

The list also includes US-made furniture, carpets, cars, mechanical instruments and tools, stationary, cosmetics, perfumes, toys, cigarettes and tobacco, movies and TV series, cassette tapes and computers “in case there was an alternative.” – Albawaba.com
