ALBAWABA - Italian media reported on Sunday that the coast guard discovered six remains off the coast of Sicily, thought to be among the 21 people missing after a migrant shipwreck earlier this month.
The Italian coast guard reported on Wednesday that seven male Syrian nationals were rescued from a semi-sunken yacht southwest of the island of Lampedusa following a disaster.
Rescuers were informed by the survivors that they had departed from Libya on September 1st and that during severe weather, 21 out of the 28 passengers, including three children, had fallen into the water.
"We left Sabrata, Libya, on Sunday afternoon," one of the unnamed survivors told Italian media.
Based on the locations where the six bodies were discovered, rescuers believe that some of the 21 missing people from the disaster may have been among them, according to an Italian news agency, AGI.
Lampedusa mayor, Filippo Mannino, stated that the incident is "another tragedy" that hit the Italian shores.
Cited by local Italian media, Mannino stated: ""We hoped, in the hours following the rescue of the 7 Syrians, that the coast guard patrol boats would be able to find the missing alive. But the passing of time has made us lose all hope,".
According to the latest estimates from the Italian interior ministry, approximately 43,000 migrants have arrived in Italy so far in 2024, a significant decrease from previous years.
