Israeli warplanes bombed a tunnel along the Gaza-Egypt border early Monday in response to Palestinian mortar and rocket attacks against Israeli targets on Sunday. Two Palestinian factions, the Popular Front and the Democratic Front, reportedly fired 12 mortars at the Erez border crossing. It was the first rocket attack since July 16.
At the time of the attack, two mortar rounds landed near an ambulance that was reportedly transferring Palestinian patients into Israel for medical treatment. Dr. Moaiya Hassanain, of the Gaza Health Ministry, said it was a “miracle” that no patients were injured.
Israel responded to the mortar attacks by striking a tunnel under the Palestinian city of Rafah, along the Gaza-Egypt border. Israel maintains the tunnel was being used to smuggle explosives from Egypt into Gaza Strip. No casualties were reported in either of the attacks, the Jerusalem Post reported.
