Israeli University lecturers began a strike Sunday, affecting all undergraduate students at Bar-Ilan, Haifa, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv universities, reported Haaretz newspaper.
It added that the Ministry of Finance and the Teachers' Union failed Saturday night to reach agreement over the lecturers' demands for a salary increase identical to the one granted to the defense researchers at the Ministry of Defense.
Quoting Asa Lifshitz, the chairman of the Council for the Organization of Academic Staff, the daily said that the Treasury signed a secret agreement with the defense researchers, giving them an increase of four percent and granting senior workers a special bonus for 25 years of work.
No masters or doctoral students will be affected. Approximately 4,500 lecturers are taking part in the walkout, said Haaretz.
