ALBAWABA - Fighting in southern Lebanon's rocky terrain is turning out to be much more challenging than anticipated, according to Israeli troops on the northern front, undermining the benefit of their military supremacy. The American news network CNN reported on this today.

The troops said the difficult terrain in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah militants are based, is a major obstacle. The topographical diversity of this area makes the Israeli army's greater soldier numbers, sophisticated weapons, and intelligence skills less effective.

However, troops who have served in the Gaza Strip said it is much more difficult for them to function in Lebanon since the fighting scenario along the northern border differs greatly from what they experienced in Gaza.

Concerns on the growth of ground operations in Lebanon were expressed by a number of troops to CNN, particularly in light of Israel's recent designation of Gaza as a secondary front. Four of Israel's seven brigades are currently fighting in Lebanon.

CNN also said that the degree of resistance shown by Hezbollah forces has shocked military specialists. This is in spite of the fact that Israel has attacked and killed a number of important Hezbollah figures, including Hassan Nasrallah, the organization's secretary-general.

According to one Israeli reserve soldier who spoke to CNN, he had previously declined to enlist in the army in protest of Israel's military activities in Lebanon and its occupation of the West Bank. He said, "Wars create more wars, and children who witness their families die will inevitably choose to resist."

Notably, Israel has been stepping up its airstrikes on Hezbollah sites in Lebanon since September 23, 2024, and has launched military operations soon after. Official data indicate that over 1.2 million people have been displaced and almost 1,300 people have died as a consequence of the Israeli assault.
