The Israeli population rose by 2.4 percent over the past year to reach 6.4 million, including more than one million Arabs, the Central Statistics Bureau announced Sunday.

The bureau said 76.6 percent, or 4.95 million, of Israelis were Jewish, while 18.6 percent were Arab and the remaining 4.8 percent were classified as "other," mostly Christians or non-Jewish immigrants.

The number of Israeli residents grew at a slower pace in 2000 than in the previous year because fewer immigrants arrived, the office said.

Some 61,000 immigrants moved to Israel in the past year, compared with 77,000 in 1999.

The Arab population includes about 200,000 Palestinians who live in east Jerusalem, which Israel captured and annexed in 1967 -- JERUSALEM (AFP)
