Israeli police were on high alert Tuesday in occupied east Jerusalem, fearing violent confrontations with Palestinians following police orders to ban a gathering to commemorate late Palestinian leader Faisal Husseini, said the Jerusalem Post.
Israeli Public Security Minister Uzi Landau issued a directive banning a gathering at the Palestine Liberation Organization's Jerusalem headquarters in the Orient House.
The mass meeting was to honor the PLO's former Jerusalem representative who died last month in Kuwait.
Members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Christian and Muslim community, members of the Israeli Knesset and peace activists are scheduled to attend the commemoration service, according to a statement released Monday by the Orient House.
There will be several speeches and announcements at the ceremony, which is set to start Tuesday evening, said the statement, cited by the Post – Albawaba.com
