An Israeli mentally ill man poured a flammable liquid on his estranged wife and set her alight Wednesday afternoon in their Tel Aviv apartment, burning her severely, The Jerusalem Post reported.

The woman was rushed to Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer, where she was in a serious condition, the Israeli paper said, adding that the husband, who had fled, was later caught at a mental hospital where he had turned himself in.

The wife, who was in the process of getting a divorce, had filed five complaints with the police against her husband over the past two years because of death threats he had made against her, the daily added.

Family violence has forced women and children to struggle for survival in their own homes, according to Jewish Women International.
