Israel rejects US call to join NPT

Israel on Wednesday said the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) was "ineffective" after a US official called on Tel Aviv to join it. "This treaty has proven its ineffectiveness, it did not prevent countries like India, Pakistan and North Korea from acquiring nuclear arms," an Israeli foreign ministry official said, according to Haaretz.

"And when it comes to Iran, you can see the impact it's having," he said.

On Tuesday, Rose Gottemoeller, the US assitant secretary of state for verification and compliance, stated at the United Nations that encouraging all countries to join the pact was a major goal for Washington. "Universal adherence to the NPT itself, including by India, Israel, Pakistan and North Korea ... remains a fundamental objective of the United States," she said.
