ALBAWABA - The Israeli army demolished nearly 20 residential buildings in Jenin refugee camp, marking the largest destruction of its kind since the 2002 Battle of Jenin. The coordinated explosions, part of an ongoing military operation, caused widespread displacement and devastation.
On the 13th day of Israel’s military offensive in Jenin, troops laid explosive wires across multiple buildings before triggering simultaneous detonations. By 3:15 PM, powerful blasts rattled the entire city and surrounding areas. The Israeli military later confirmed the operation, describing it as part of “Defensive Shield”.
The explosions severely impacted nearby structures, including Jenin Governmental Hospital, where windows and doors were shattered. Hospital director Dr. Wissam Bakr stated that no casualties were reported but criticized the short evacuation notice, given just 90 minutes before the blasts.
The forced displacement of thousands has worsened the humanitarian crisis. According to Jenin Mayor Mohammad Jarar, over 15,000 people have fled their homes, with 6,000 seeking refuge in Jenin city while others relocated to 39 nearby municipalities.
Despite the destruction, displaced residents insist they will return. One resident told Al Jazeera, “Even if we have to live in tents, we will rebuild our homes.”
Israeli Minister Yisrael Katz confirmed that troops will remain in Jenin, raising concerns over further military action. Palestinian officials have called for international intervention, warning that continued occupation threatens regional stability.
