Israel Tuesday condemned Morocco's decision to close Israel's liaison office in its capital Rabat and its own liaison office with the Jewish state in Tel Aviv.
"This step is inconsistent with Morocco's legacy as a promoter of peace and dialogue in the region," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Morocco made the announcement Monday after an Arab summit in Cairo over the weekend urged Arab states to cut diplomatic ties with Israel because of weeks of violence in the Palestinian territories which have killed 136 people, almost all of them Arabs.
Morocco and Israel had opened their liaison offices in 1994 as a means of having diplomatic representation in each country below the level of full-fledged embassies – JERUSALEM (AFP)
