Israeli helicopters and artillery pounded a border region in southern Lebanon late Friday, police said.
A helicopter gunship fired several missiles on the Majidiyeh barracks, a former training camp of the now-disbanded Israeli-allied South Lebanon Army militia in the western sector of south Lebanon, they said.
Moments later, an Israeli Mirkava tank posted in nearby Abbassiyeh fired at least 12 rockets on Majidiyeh, they said.
It was not known whether anyone was in the Majidiyeh barracks, which had been evacuated a few days ago by the Shiite fundamentalist group Hizbollah, which took over the site after the Israeli pullout from southern Lebanon in May.
The Lebanese sources could not confirm whether shots were fired from southern Lebanon against northern Israel.
An Israeli military source confirmed only that shots were fired on the ceasefire line between Israel and Lebanon.
Majidiyeh is adjacent to the disputed Shabaa Farms, a mountainous region at the Lebanese and Syrian borders occupied by Israel since 1967.
The area is where the Lebanese militant group Hizbollah captured three Israeli soldiers October 7 in an operation beyond the 1967 armistice line.
Israel captured the Shabaa Farms in from Syria, which backs Lebanese claims to sovereignty over the area. Israel says the Shabaa's fate can only be decided through a peace treaty with Damascus.
But the United Nations has said the Shabaa Farms do not fall under UN Resolutions 425 and 426, which called on Israel to leave all Lebanese territory -- MARJAYOUN, Lebanon (AFP)
