Two Israeli soldiers were slightly wounded in two of a dozen incidents of violence in the West Bank and the Gaza strip overnight, despite the Sharm el-Sheikh truce accord, a military spokesman said Wednesday.

The soldiers were wounded in separate grenade and automatic weapons attacks on positions southeast of Abu Dis, an Arab suburb of Jerusalem, the spokesman said.

Five other armed attacks were reported in the West Bank, and three in Gaza.

In the south of the West Bank a border patrol drew fire from near the village of Al-Khader, near Bethlehem.

Shots were fired in the direction of a military post guarding a small group of Jewish settlers in the Tel Rueda quarter of Hebron city.

In the north of the West Bank, border guards and soldiers were targeted near the autonomous Palestinian city of Tulkarem.

Shots were also fired at the Jewish settlers' colony of Psagot, near the Ramallah checkpoint near Kalkilia on Wednesday morning.

The military or border guards fired back in each case, the Israeli military spokesman said.

The violence came despite a ceasefire announced by US President Bill Clinton at an emergency summit in Egypt aimed at halting almost three weeks of bloodletting in the Palestinian territories.

The commander of the Israeli forces in the West Bank, Brigadier General Benny Gantz, expressed his hope to Israeli public radio Wednesday morning that the ceasefire hammered out at the Sharm el-Sheikh summit would take hold in the next 48 hours – JERUSALEM (AFP)
