Iraqi deputy trade minister Fakhri Rishan expressed Tuesday his hope that Tehran-Baghdad trade and economic relations would strengthen in the future, reported Iran News Agency (IRNA).

Rishan, heading an eight-member delegation, arrived in Tehran last Tuesday. His one-week visit was aimed at promoting economic ties with the Islamic Republic, said the agency.

Development of cross border markets was also a subject discussed with the Iranian officials, he added.

The Iraqi official further expressed the hope that grounds would be paved for Iraqi nationals to visit holy shrines in the Islamic Republic.

Iran and Iraq are making efforts to expand their relations in all areas following the 1980-1988 war, which claimed heavy casualties on both sides.

In early December, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi called on both countries to respect the 1975 Algiers Accord which fixed the countries' joint borders, according to AFP.

Kharrazi visit to Baghdad was the first by an Iranian official since the war.

The accord ended Iranian support for Kurdish rebels in Iraq in return for a sharing of the Shatt-al Arab waterway, known to Iranians as the Arvand Roud, which forms part of the two states' border, said the agency -- Albawaba.com
