Iraq's official newspapers on Wednesday urged that the Intifada in the Palestinian territories continue, warning against US initiatives to curtail the uprising against Israel.
"The Intifada is the greatest weapon of our Palestinians. It must continue," said Babel, run by President Saddam Hussein's eldest son, Uday.
"Since the Zionist enemy and Arabs favorable to (political) rule have realized that the Intifada was not a simple momentary reaction, they are looking for a way of containing it and stopping it," the daily said.
"The Arab regimes allied to the US-Zionist administration know that the continuation of the Intifada and demonstrations by the Arab masses are capable of overthrowing their thrones," it added.
Ath-Thawra newspaper, mouthpiece of the ruling Baath party, and Al-Jumhuriya issued similar warnings.
"The rights of Arabs will not be regained through bargaining and concessions," Ath-Thawra said, stressing that "Arabs mobilize their capabilities in the struggle against Zionism and its US ally".
"Arabs from the Atlantic to the Gulf have held their summit and said in one voice: Palestine is Arab, down with Zionism," Al-Jumhuriya said.
Arab leaders are to meet on October 21 and 22 in Cairo for a summit to discuss the bloodshed in the Palestinian territories.
Saddam Hussein, who was not invited to the last Arab summit in Cairo in 1996, the only one held since the Gulf War of 1991, said Tuesday Iraq will attend even if he is unable to take part - BAGHDAD (AFP)
