Iraq fired surface-to-air missiles at American and British warplanes overflying the north of the country Wednesday and forced them to flee, according to an air defense spokesman quoted by the official INA news agency.

"Enemy airplanes proceeding from Turkey carried out sorties over the provinces of Dohuk, Erbil and Niniveh," the spokesman said. "They fled under fire from Iraqi missiles."

Iraqi anti-air defenses fire nearly every day on US and British planes that enforce no-fly zones in the north and south of the country.

Baghdad, which does not recognize the flight restrictions, says US and British warplanes have killed 300 Iraqis and injured 891 others since December 1998 -- BAGHDAD (AFP)
