Iraq is ready to send four medical teams into the Palestinian territories to treat people wounded by Israeli bullets, a Palestinian diplomat said Tuesday, BAGHDAD (AFP)
Charge d'affaires Najah Abderrahman told AFP that Foreign Minister Mohammad Said al-Sahhaf and Health Minister Umid Medhet Mubarak had told him of the decision taken by President Saddam Hussein
"The four medical teams are ready as soon as the Palestinian Authority agrees to receive them," the diplomat said Mubarak had told him.
Iraq has called for volunteers to join a holy war or jihad against Israel and announced a gift of five million euros (4.35 million dollars) for the Intifada or uprising.
Mubarak told the Iraqi News Agency that no less than 12,000 doctors, 21,000 paramedics, 5,000 nurses and 1,150 dentists had already volunteered to go to the Palestinian territories.
Iraq opposes the Middle East peace process with Israel and has kept its distance from the Palestinian Authority. But the Iraqi leadership will attend an Arab summit in Cairo from October 21 to 22 which is to debate the violence that has left almost 100 dead since September 28 --(AFP)
