Explosions rocked the northern part of Fallujah and American jets were seen flying over the city, witnesses said. At least two people were killed and three injured, hospital officials said.
In recent weeks the US military has launched repeated attacks on various parts of the city, saying it is targeting facilities used by al Qaeda activist, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Elsewhere, an Iraqi Kurdish translator working for the US occupation was killed early on Monday by armed men in Baquba, east of Baghdad, AlJazeera reported.
Meanwhile, unknown gunmen attacked the car of a cleric belonging to the Association of Muslim Scholars, killing him and briefly taking his bodyguards hostage, the group said Monday.
The Sunni cleric, Sheikh Hazem al-Zeidi, was killed late Sunday after leaving a mosque in Baghdad's eastern slum of Sadr City, said Sheikh Abdul-Sattar Abdul-Jabbar, a senior member of the group.
The two bodyguard were taken hostage, but freed early Monday, he said, according to The AP.
On Monday another cleric from the group was shot dead as he entered a mosque in Baghdad to perform noon prayers. The cleric was identified as Sheikh Mohammed Jadoa al-Janabi. (albawaba.com)
