A suicide bomber wearing a vest laden with explosives blew himself up inside a popular Baghdad kebab restaurant Sunday, killing at least eight people, police said. The attack took place 2:45 p.m. at the Serwan restaurant, one of Baghdad's most popular, at around lunchtime, police 1st Lt. Thaer Mahmoud said, according to The AP. The injured were taken to Baghdad's Yarmouk hospital, he added.

The restaurant was popular with both Iraqi army soldiers and police officers and is located in one of Baghdad's most patrolled areas.

Earlier, a suicide car bomber struck an Iraqi military checkpoint north of Baghdad on Sunday, killing two soldiers and one civilian, officials said. Thirteen others were injured.

The suicide attack took place at 9:45 a.m. in Tikrit, Army Capt. Muhanad Ahmed said. The civilian killed was an employee who manned the security checkpoint.

The wounded included eight soldiers and five civilians, Ahmed said. Civilians were near the checkpoint because construction workers were fixing the gate.

Meanwhile, gunmen killed two Iraqi police officers in western Baghdad as they headed to work Sunday morning, while a second band of activists killed an electrical engineer who was on his way to work at an oil refinery in the Iraqi capital.
