An Iranian reformist who claimed conservatives are trying to impeach President Mohammad Khatami will appear in court Saturday to answer questions over the allegation.
Mohammad Salamati, who made the charge in a public speech last week, has been ordered to appear following a complaint from the prosecutor general, the official IRNA news agency said Friday.
Salamati accused the conservative Islamic Coalition Association of getting a motion before the supreme court to oust the president over his "incapacity" to perform his constitutional duties.
The head of the Tehran province judiciary, Abassali Alizadeh, was quoted Tuesday as saying the claim was "false, and the person who is found to have originated it may be pursued by the courts."
Khatami himself has lamented his inability to push through his reform program in the face of stiff conservative opposition which toughened after his reform supporters won control of parliament in February.
But conservatives have denied there is any intent to push Khatami, whose four-year term ends next year, out of office -- TEHRAN (AFP)
