A leading conservative Iranian daily on Tuesday told British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on the eve of his visit to the Islamic Republic that the "Iranians hate the English."

In an editorial entitled "What Mr. Straw needs to know", the hard-line Jomhuri-Eslami newspaper said Britain was considered in Iran as "crafty enemies" and a "messenger boy" of the United States.

"Jack Straw's visit to Tehran, his third in a year, comes despite the fact that public opinion here displays no confidence in British officials and the diverse sections of our society see them as crafty enemies," the paper wrote.

"The Iranian people hate the English and their mission as a messenger boy for the Americans," it added, describing Britain as the main ally of the United States and Israel in Europe.

Straw, lobbying support for the US and British tough stance against Baghdad, kicked off a regional tour Monday in Cairo. He is due in Iran on Wednesday. (Albawaba.com)
