The Islamic Republic of Iran's top leaders, including Supreme Guide Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Mohammad Khatami, have held a rare high-ranking meeting on regional and internal security, national radio reported Tuesday.

A brief statement issued on the eve of the anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States said Monday's meeting in Tehran "examined the regional situation" and "subjects related to national security", the report said.

No further details on the Supreme Council of National Security's talks - also attended by senior army officials and ministers of intelligence, foreign affairs, interior and defense - were given, although the presence of supreme leader and commander-in-chief Ayatollah Khamenei in such meetings is rare.
