The Islamic Republic of Iran recently announced the continuation of flights to Kabul, the Afghan capital, following years of no flights due to the war in Afghanistan.
An official with the Iranian Civil Aviation Organization conveyed that the Mahan Air Airlines will operate three weekly 250-seat Airbus flights to the city, with a stopover in Mashhad. The flights will be made to and from the Bagram airport, 60 kilometers from Kabul, until the international airport is rebuilt.
An economic delegation is expected to fly from Iran to Kabul on Monday to examine the possibility of establishing economic and trade ties between the two nations. Iran has been a hotbed for sheltering Afghan refugees during the war-torn years. Iran provides refuge to about 2 million Afghans.
Afghanistan's relations with Iran have fluctuated over the years, with periodic disputes over the water rights of the Helmand River as the main issue of contention.(Albawaba.com)
