Iran has broadcast images said to be taken from a C.I.A drone captured in 2011.

Iranian state TV aired the images on Wednesday, which it said showed an aerial view of an airport and a city, thought to be Kandahar in Afghanistan.

The Islamic Republic has claimed it managed to reverse-engineer the Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinal drone, which the White House asked to be returned without luck.

The head of the Revolutionary Guard air force said initially Iran didn’t realise the drone belonged to the C.I.A, only discovering who owned it after it was brought down.

The U.S. uses drones both for surveillance and combat in countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen.
