Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi on Tuesday deplored the branding of Palestinian liberation movements by the European Union foreign ministers as terrorists, Iran’s official news agency (IRNA) reported.
The EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday labelled the Palestinian resistance groups as terrorist networks. Asefi was quoted by the agency as saying that such a communique by the EU indicates the extent to which the EU is unaware of Israeli terrorist attacks against the Palestinians. Such a communique will lead to worsening of the current crisis in the Middle East, he said.
He added that the Palestinian Intifada is a popular movement which enjoys unprecedented support of the Muslim nations and freedom loving people around the world. "Resistance to Israeli terrorist attacks is the legitimate right of the Palestinian people as stipulated in the United Nations Charter and recognized by international norms," Asefi said.
Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi condemned Israeli "sabotage" of a meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) by preventing Palestinian President Yaser Arafat from attending it.
The move was further a "big insult" to the Palestinian President, the Iranian official siad, adding the Monday urgent meeting of the OIC in Doha had been held on Arafat's request.
