The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), with the aim of increasing its shipping fleet and protecting the environment, has signed a $201 million contract with Iranian shipbuilding companies for the construction of eight container and passenger ships, Iran's official news agency (IRNA) reported Wednesday.

Managing Director of the IRISL Ali Ashraf Afkhami was quoted by the agency as saying that some $188 million has been allocated for the construction of six container ships at Khalij-e Fars Shipbuilding Complex while another $13 million has been allocated for building two passenger ships.

“This is the for the first time that Germany is transferring its technical know how in shipbuilding to Iran,” he said, adding that after the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) opens the relative letter of credits, the construction of ships will begin -- Albawaba.com
