Iranian President Mohammad Khatami held talks in Qatar on Tuesday with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's No.2, Ezzat Ibrahim, on ways of boosting relations between the two former foes, an Iraqi source said.
"They expressed their desire to boost relations between the two countries," said a member of the Iraqi delegation in Doha for the Islamic summit, which ended late Monday.
On Friday, Iran's Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi and his Iraqi counterpart Mohammad Said al-Sahhaf held talks in Doha on "normalization" of bilateral relations.
Iran and Iraq fought a bloody war from 1980 to 1988 but never broke off diplomatic relations. They promoted ties to the level of charge d'affaires in 1990.
The armed Iranian People's Mujahedeen presence in Iraq, like the Iraqi opposition in Iran, is a stumbling block to the normalization of relations between Tehran and Baghdad, who have not signed a peace treaty after the eight-year conflict -- DOHA (AFP)
