Head of Elections Headquarters announced on on Sunday that 475 hopefuls registered to run for president on June 12. According to IRNA, Karmran Daneshjoo said that the number of hopefuls dropped by 53 percent compared to the previous presidential election in 2005.
According to the Iranian law, candidates had five days to register with the Interior Ministry after which the Guardian Council will screen the applicants’ qualification in five days time.
The youngest applicant was a 19-year old Iranian and the oldest was 86, Daneshjoo added.
Meanwhile, the Guardian Council has started procedure to confirm qualification of the applicants. The candidates who may fail to get confirmation from the Guardian Council will have four days to appeal with the council for a re-consideration and then the final list will come out in May 22.
