Some 300 Indonesian Muslim students on Wednesday demonstrated in front of the US embassy to protest Washington's stand on the Palestinian violence.

"Long Live the Palestinians, Go to Hell Israel and USA," said one of the posters carried by the protestors, members of the Forum of Brotherhood of Campus Missionary Institutions.

The protestors, wearing jackets in their university colors, also burned a US and an Israeli flag to yells of "Jihad, Jihad" ("Holy war, holy war").

They had earlier gathered at the Al-Azhar mosque in south Jakarta before marching through the main thoroughfare towards the US embassy in the city center, some 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) north.

The demonstrators, who also carried posters criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and US President Bill Clinton, stopped briefly in front of the UN mission on the way.

Both the UN and the US missions were closed, Wednesday being a Muslim public holiday in Indonesia.

Some 100 policemen guarded the front of the US embassy but there were no reported clashes with the protestors – JAKARTA (AFP)
