Indian troops Monday shot dead seven Pakistani militants who were trying to infiltrate Kashmir, an army official said.

The incident took place at Nowshera, in the border district of Rajouri, 135 kilometers (83 miles) north of Kashmir's winter capital Jammu, said Major Animesh Trivedi.

The group of Pakistani militants was trying to cross the border and started firing when challenged by Indian troops, Trivedi said.

"Seven bodies have been recovered so far and the operation is still continuing," he said.

According to senior police officials, this is the second attempt by Pakistani militants to infiltrate Indian-administered Kashmir in two days.
