UAE joins in World Diabetes day Monument Challenge “Light up the skyline” on the first UN observed World Diabetes Day 2007. Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) building in Abu Dhabi is lit up in blue, the color for diabetes selected by IDF, to support the day long worldwide campaign.
More than 85 iconic buildings around the world will be illuminated blue to mark World Diabetes Day on November 14 2007, including the London Eye, the world’s biggest Ferris wheel, and the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Empire State Building in New York.
As the global media spotlight prepares to shine on diabetes World Diabetes Day (WDD), 14 November 2007, four of the nation’s leading voices in healthcare have pulled together in support of the United Nations’ Unite for Diabetes’ campaign.
The Emirates Foundation, Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HAAD), UAE’s leading centre for specialist diabetes care , Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) and the Ministry of Health, have pledged allegiance as the nation attempts to stamp out diabetes, said to affect 19.5%, or almost one in five persons in the UAE of the 20-79 age group.

Officials have confirmed that more than 10,000 people are targeted to join WALK UAE 2007 - ‘START WALKING. PREVENT DIABETES.’, the third step of ICLDC’s multi-pronged public health awareness campaign, ‘DIABETES. KNOWLEDGE. ACTION.’,
The walkathon is set to cover a five kilometre route and is designed to encourage participation from families, business teams and individuals from across the UAE.
