Lebanon’s Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri issued circulars Saturday on proceeding with a modernization plan in order to speed up work and reduce costs, reported the Daily Star newspaper.

He also ordered the public sector to “cut the red tape and replace some of the foreign currencies with the euro.”

Labor Minister Ali Qanso will personally oversee the implementation of this program.

Special teams from different departments will be formed to draft new laws concerning modernization of public sectors.

The purpose of these measures are to increase the efficiency of public servants and carry out some programs aimed at providing high-quality and speedy services to citizens, said the paper.

Hariri is determined to speed up the restructuring of public departments and reduce costs this year.

Under pressure from the World Bank and other international agencies, Hariri has already fired more than 500 staff of state-owned Tele-Liban and approved the sacking of 1,400 staff of Middle East Airlines. Other steps to reduce the size of the public sector are expected soon.

Hariri also instructed some public departments to convert some European currencies into the euro.

Certain European countries are expected to make the euro the official currency at the beginning of next year – Albawaba.com
