Vice President Al Gore won the key toss-up state of Wisconsin in Tuesday's election, taking its 11 electoral votes as he and Texas Governor George W. Bush scrounged tooth and nail for victory, holding their breaths for results from Florida, ABC reported.
As of 4:50 am (0950 GMT) Gore led with 47,368,827 votes, while Bush had 47,266,032, a spread of only 102,000 votes.
Gore also led in electoral college votes with 249 to Bush's 246, without a winner in the decisive state of Florida, which carries 25 electoral votes. The winner in Florida will win the presidency.
The race in Florida remained too close to call, with 2,904,461 votes for Bush and 2,903,555 for Gore, a difference of only 906 votes – WASHINGTON (AFP)
