Police in Ghana have arrested a man who allegedly threatened to burn down the consular section of the US embassy in Accra and other American property, a police source in Accra said Wednesday.

Samuel Akwei Allotey, 27, was arrested on Tuesday. He allegedly told the Criminal Investigation Department that he had made the threat out of frustration at the persistent rejection of his application for a US visa.

"The police took the threat very seriously in view of the recent terrorist attacks in United States and also the fact that Allotey works at Frankie's Restaurant in Accra, which is patronized by US embassy staff," the source said.

Police were conducting further investigations to enable them to produce Allotey in court, he said.

The US embassy meanwhile banned him from entering any US installation in the west African country -- ACCRA (AFP)
