Gunmen fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the home of Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh on Tuesday, damaging the building but causing no casualties, a Palestinian government official said. Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman, accused Fatah of firing the rocket in an attempt to assassinate Haniyeh and vowed punishment "without mercy" of the perpetrators.
The grenade "penetrated the house and exploded", Barhoum said, according to Reuters. "Thank God there are no injuries," he added. "Hamas has decided to punish the attackers and the killers and it will not be reluctant to punish them without any mercy."
The attack occurred as gunmen from Hamas and Fatah factions battled in the streets for a fourth successive day. Fourteen people were killed in fighting on Monday and five died by early Tuesday, hospital officials said.
