A French regional councilor said Monday he was suing a gay magazine for revealing his homosexuality in its latest issue.

"I am not ashamed of who I am but it's up to me, and me alone, to decide whether to reveal my homosexuality," said Jean-Luc Romero, a councilor from the Ile-de-France region around Paris.

Romero said since the article in the magazine "e.male" appeared on October 19, he had received numerous phone calls from "panicked" fellow gay politicians worried that they could be the next target of the magazine.

"This is unheard of in this country," Romero said. "I had planned to come out but on my own terms and after having informed my family."

The article in "e.male," on the forthcoming municipal elections in Paris, said that right-wing candidate Philippe Seguin was trying to appeal to gay voters in Paris' fourth district by including on his electoral list politicians who were either homosexual or supported gay causes.

It said Romero may be among the politicians chosen by Seguin for his list -- PARIS (AFP)
