French police on Tuesday detained at least two more Islamic militants in the Paris region, correspondents on the scene said.

It followed the detention of seven suspects Friday in dawn raids in the Paris suburbs, after French police stepped up surveillance of Islamic extremist circles following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

On Sunday, police extended the detention of the seven suspects as part of an investigation into potential attacks against US interests in France.

The French counter-intelligence service, DST, said it launched an inquiry on September 10 -- the day before the terrorist strikes in the United States -- into a possible attack against the US embassy in Paris.

It was not clear whether there was any direct link between the suspects and the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, which Washington says were masterminded by Saudi-born Islamic extremist Osama bin Laden.

The seven hauled in on Friday are believed to be nationals of France or a north African country, and had been under surveillance for alleged links with bin Laden -- PARIS (AFP)
